LASIK

Laser Assisted Surgery

LASIK (laser in situ keratomileusis) is a laser vision correction technique that uses an excimer laser to reshape the cornea and correct a wide range of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.

LASIK at Cool Springs: See Clearly Without Glasses or Contacts

If you have struggled with wearing uncomfortable contact lenses or prescription glasses, you may be looking for a better way to see more clearly.  At Cool Springs Surgical Associates, we offer a long-term alternative to being dependent on contacts and glasses – safe and effective LASIK surgery. In most cases, the treatment effect of laser vision correction is permanent, especially if your eyeglass prescription was stable before treatment.

Dr. Aaron Porter and his medical team strive to deliver excellent patient care and reduce anxiety by carefully explaining exactly what to expect during surgery.  In addition, they also provide superb advice on how to prepare for surgery while reviewing the possible complications and explaining what they will do to minimize the risks.  Their goal is to help all of their patients feel relaxed and confident on the day of surgery.

iLASIK

iLASIK is a state-of-the-art technology laser vision correction procedure that combines wavefront analysis and map technology along with blade-free femtosecond laser technology to create the safest and most reliable laser vision correction procedure. iLASIK uses a Vario 3D map showing even the slightest imperfection of your cornea.  This allows Dr. Porter to determine the characteristics needed to be corrected and creates a customized and precise treatment plan to follow during the procedure. The Intralase FS laser then creates a corneal flap using computer guided technology, which eliminates the need of mechanical bladed devices and greatly reduces the risk of flap-related complications. The Star S4 IR Excimer laser is then used to gently reshape your cornea.  The Star S4 laser incorporates an “Iris Registration” system ensuring a synchronous three-dimensional tracking of your eye movement during laser vision correction surgery for perfectly accurate laser placement.

Advanced LASIK Technology

Dr. Aaron Porter and his medical team are committed to providing the best possible laser vision correction treatments for all their patients.  They use an array of cutting-edge technology that allow for the customization of each vision correction procedure.

Our Practice Utilizes:

Ziemer Femtosecond Laser

This bladeless laser creates an ultra-precise corneal flap with a low-energy, high-frequency pulse. Compared to earlier femtosecond systems, the Ziemer is gentler on the eye, leading to faster healing, greater comfort, and reduced risk of complications.

Alcon EX500 Excimer Laser

This high-speed excimer laser is equipped with advanced eye-tracking and wavefront-optimized technology, allowing for extremely accurate reshaping of the cornea based on your eye’s unique curvature. It emits 500 laser pulses per second for an incredibly fast and precise treatment, enhancing your safety, comfort, and vision outcomes.

Frequently asked questions

These are some of the frequently asked questions we are asked by patients about LASIK eye surgery.

Am I a good candidate for LASIK?

Most healthy adults with stable vision and no major eye conditions qualify for LASIK. During your consultation, your surgeon will evaluate your prescription, corneal thickness, and overall eye health to determine if LASIK eye surgery is right for you.

Are there alternatives to LASIK?

PRK, or photorefractive keratectomy, is another laser vision correction alternative. This style of correction is especially popular among those in the military, people whose lifestyles or hobbies put them at higher risk of eye injuries, or people whose corneas are too thin for traditional LASIK. PRK takes longer to heal than LASIK, but avoids the creation of a flap during the procedure.

Does LASIK hurt?

You may feel slight pressure, but the procedure is generally painless. Numbing eye drops are used to keep you comfortable. Some patients report mild irritation or watering for a few hours afterward, but this usually subsides quickly.

How long do LASIK results last?

LASIK permanently reshapes the cornea to correct vision, and the improvements are long-lasting. While the surgery does not wear off, your eyes will continue to age naturally, which may cause changes in your vision over time. Most patients continue to enjoy the benefits of LASIK for decades.

When can I go back to work after LASIK eye surgery?

Most patients are able to return to work and daily activities the next day after LASIK. It is important to avoid rubbing your eyes and to follow all post-operative instructions carefully. Strenuous exercise, swimming, and contact sports should be avoided for at least a week to allow your eyes time to heal.

Is LASIK safe?

Yes, LASIK is considered a very safe and effective procedure. It has been performed for decades and is one of the most common elective surgeries worldwide. With advances in technology and careful screening of candidates, LASIK has an excellent track record for safety and success. The biggest risk of LASIK surgery is dry eyes for the first few months, which can be treated with eye drops.
