While LASIK surgery is the most well-known vision correction surgery, it isn’t always the best fit for every eye. Both LASIK and PRK surgery treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism by reshaping the cornea with an excimer laser. The main difference lies in how the surgeon accesses the corneal tissue.
LASIK vs. PRK: The Technique
- LASIK: The surgeon creates a thin flap in the cornea (usually with a femtosecond laser), lifts it, reshapes the tissue underneath, and then repositions the flap.
- PRK: No flap is created. Instead, the thin outer layer (epithelium) is removed entirely before the laser treatment. A bandage contact lens is then placed over the eye while the layer regrows.
Comparing Recovery
LASIK is popular because of its fast visual recovery. Most patients see clearly within 24 hours and experience very little discomfort.
PRK requires more patience. Because the surface layer must grow back, the first few days can involve light sensitivity and irritation. Vision may remain blurry for several days before stabilizing. However, long-term visual results for both procedures are excellent.
Which One is Right for You?
Surgeons often recommend PRK in specific situations:
- Thin Corneas: PRK preserves more of the cornea’s natural structure, making it the safer choice for patients with limited corneal thickness.
- High-Impact Lifestyles: PRK eliminates the risk of future flap-related injuries, making it ideal for those in contact sports or high-risk occupations.
- Corneal Irregularities: Patients with certain corneal surface features may be better candidates for PRK than LASIK.
